Laws, disasters, and public health emergencies

IFRC Disaster Law and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have recently concluded global research looking at Law and Public Health Emergencies, examining over 130 emergency decrees and 31 institutional frameworks, including 16 from Asia and the Pacific. The research provides examples of good practice, gaps and recommendations on how to strengthen legal preparedness for public health emergencies and how to ensure better synergy with disaster risk management (DRM) mechanisms to build on pre -existing systems, enable an ” all of society” approach, so that no one is left behind.

This paper was presented by Ms Gabrielle Emery, Asia Pacific Disaster Law Manager, IFRC at the ‘Regional Lessons Learning Symposium and Its Impact on Disaster Management and Resilience’.
