Increasing adaptation capacity of children, adolescent, and youth in the context of COVID-19 and a changing climate
This presentation highlights reflection and analysis on partnered approach and feminist participatory principles to promote peer-to-peer engagement and learning-acting-sharing methods, to support the active participation of local Children, Adolescents and Youth (CAY) and the inclusion of their voice and views on disaster risk management (DRM) and climate change, particularly during the pandemic. Amidst the spread of COVID-19 in the Asia and the Pacific region since 2020, collaboration among CAY representatives and stakeholders in disaster risk reduction (DRR) work has been sustained by Plan International and its partners in different contexts. CAY have been actively involved as risk communicators about COVID-19 and play an essential role in Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), for example support in addressing hoax information, supporting their peers and community as hygiene promoters, leading a youth and community survey on the impact of COVID-19 to girls, collecting feedback and promoting accountability through a youth reporter initiative. Through lessons learnt during the examination of multi-country DRR project implementation in Asia-Pacific countries, the paper explores the underlying challenges of sustaining meaningful participation of CAY for maintaining gender equality and inclusion in DRM, including in COVID-19 context. Additionally, the case studies in this paper explore existing and potential stakeholders and initiatives active in the field of CAY involvement in climate and health through child-centered climate change adaptation programming and partnership works.
